> - have you tried the 2.08 version ?

Unfortunately, the results are not much different. This is the output
from my first test run:

[dll] init: backend `epson' is version 1.0.208
[epson] sane_open(/dev/scanner)
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v0.2.08 - 2001-06-09
[epson] attach(/dev/scanner)
[epson] attach: opening /dev/scanner
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of sanei_scsi to 128.
[epson] send buf, size = 2
[epson] buf[0] 1b .
[epson] buf[1] 40 @
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=1024
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=512
[epson] receive buf, expected = 1, got = 0
[epson] attach: sending INQUIRY
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=512
[epson] ><
[epson] attach: device doesn't look like an Epson scanner
scanimage: open of device epson:/dev/scanner failed: Invalid argument

And this happened on my second run (I had to power cycle the scanner
after both runs):

[dll] init: backend `epson' is version 1.0.208
[epson] sane_open(/dev/scanner)
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v0.2.08 - 2001-06-09
[epson] attach(/dev/scanner)
[epson] attach: opening /dev/scanner
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of sanei_scsi to 128.
[epson] send buf, size = 2
[epson] buf[0] 1b .
[epson] buf[1] 40 @
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=1024
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=512
[epson] receive buf, expected = 1, got = 0
[epson] attach: sending INQUIRY
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: SCSI completed with cdb_status=512
[epson] >EPSON Perfecti<
[epson] attach: device doesn't look like an Epson scanner
scanimage: open of device epson:/dev/scanner failed: Invalid argument

This gives me the slight feeling that--at least at this point--this is
a SCSI communication problem. The comment "XXX untested code!" in the
HP-UX section of sanei_scsi.c doesn't really make it look too
trustworthy ;-)

On the other hand, the compatibility table lists HP-UX as "tested"
(for SANE 1.0.1; I tried it, with the same results). So, can someone
tell me what the status of SANE on HP-UX is? Anybody using it?

TIA
