Hi. I discovered a quirk about the image data format expected by frontends,
in particular xsane and xscanimage. For bit depths >=8 (grayscale, color),
larger values mean more red, green, blue, or white. On the other hand, for
1-bit depths (lineart, halftone), 0 means white and 1 means black. Is there
any particular reason for this, especially since xsane and xscanimage both
end up having to invert it anyway in order to display a preview? In any
case, I think this requirement should be mentioned in the SANE Standard
document.
