Running Debian GNU/Linux(frozen).

I run:

veal@slash:~$ find-scanner
# You may want to run this program as super-user to find all devices.
# Once you found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access
# permissions as necessary.

find-scanner: found processor "HP C5110A 3701" at device /dev/scanner
find-scanner: found processor "HP C5110A 3701" at device /dev/sg1
find-scanner: found processor "HP C5110A 3701" at device /dev/sgb
veal@slash:~$

(sgb and scanner are symlinks to sg1)
(shouldn't it say "found scanner"?)

and then try this:

veal@slash:~$ scanimage -L
veal@slash:~$ scanimage
scanimage: no SANE devices found
veal@slash:~$ scanimage -d hp > test
(scanner runs)
veal@slash:~$ ls -l test
-rw-r--r-- 1 veal veal 1118766 Apr 12 16:00 test
veal@slash:~$ xscanimage
xscanimage: no devices available.

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkmain.c: line 534 (gtk_main_quit): assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed.
veal@slash:~$ xsane
(window pops up: xsane: no devices available)

In short, I can scan only by specifying the device directly to scanimage, and
nothing in x will work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
