I am pretty sure that you can use the stock kernel with
SCSI scanners. SuSE's YaST does have an option to install
a scanner, so I guess they have all the necessary modules
pre-compiled and installed. (SuSE's installation is modules
based). You need a module for the SCSI controller and for
generic SCSI devices.

I usually run a SuSE kernel only for the installation and
right after the system comes up I'm installing one that I've
compiled so I can not give you a better answer. Read the
manual and search for "scanner installation" in the index.

> Hi everyone.

>

> Am currently using the stock EIDE kernel from SuSE 6.3 and want to

get a
> scanner working. Can I use this kernel for an SCSI scanner? If not

could I
> use the stock SCSI kernel that comes with 6.3? And evreything else

still
> work OK? Without having to compile kernels and modules? Or am I

asking too
> much?

>

> Thanks in advance for any advice you can give and apologies to SANE

list
> members since I think that this may be a little off topic.

>

> Best wishes from Steve at FeF, Spain.
