Other people seem to have had a fairly easy time with the 1200S,
so I suspect I'm doing something silly.

Anyone got any ideas what to try next, or what to try under gdb ?

John.

Initially:
/usr/local/bin/scanimage -v --device epson:/dev/scanner --help
works (repeatedly).

If I then do:
 /usr/local/bin/scanimage -v --device epson:/dev/scanner -T
that also PASSes (scanner whirrs, etc), but only the first time I try it.

The second and subsequent times, I get:
[sanei_init_debug]: Setting debug level of epson to 5.
 [epson] sane_init: sane 1.0.1

 [epson] ident failed
 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

[ it dies in strcmp, in libc ]

From this state, I can return to the initial, less broken, state by
power cycling the scanner.

Explicitly removing, and re-adding the scanner scsi device seems to have
no effect. (echo "scsi remove-single-device 0 0 2 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi).
