hello,

i am running out of sources here. since there are experts
here, i am going to throw this up and would appreciate any
help andor pointers.

i am running sane 1.0.1 with xsane (nice! btw) and gimp:

Vendor: HP Model: C1750A Rev: 3226

this scanner was running fine and now, after some moving and
some period of rest in storage, it displays a "phantom" image
slightly shifted from the original.

just to double check, went to windows and it happens
there too, so i suspect it is a hardware problem
regarding some sort of alignment or calibration.
attached i am sending two small samples to illistrate.
basically, strong color edges "bleed"

i played around a bit with gamma, and there are some
settings that minimize this, but the image always sows
some lack of "depth" - a contrast autostretch and/or hsv
autostrectch always brings the bleeding back.

is this problem fixable in software?
under linux?
is it fixable at all?

the hewlett-packard site has very little info on these
scanners (or on realigning or recalibrating them). i also
search the web to no end about this issue. the h-p site
does mention that one should "lock" the scanner head
before moving it around, which i believe was not done when
it was moved stored.

on a related issue, i just noticed that the windows scanning
software, "windows imaging, by kodak", would get a noticeably
"better looking" picture, compared to "autoenhance" in xsane
(which btw, itself enhances substantially to just plain scanning
under linux, say with xscanimage without advanced options).
there was some mention on a new gamma setting of 2.2 when i installed
the h-p deskscan software (2.8). would this mean i should
autoenhance and then move the gamma slider to 2.2 for best results?

by "better" i mean that a couple of images i acquired under windows
improved very verly little with contrast autostrecth and/or
hsv autostretch.

any and all help appreciated for both issues!

thanks a lot,

-carlos
