> Then I could avoid having to tweak the settings every time I run into
> a photo that wasn't like the last one. I've been playing with GTK and
> could prbably implement it myself, but I'd prefer to be an idea man in
> this case... A custom settings dialog would work too... I don't care
> if it's integrated into the xscanimage application...
>
> Any takers? Is something like this already implemented in 1.x?

There is a simple trick to do this:

1) Whenever you have some settings you want to keep, do "Preferences->Save
device settings" in xscanimage. The settings get saved in the directory
"$HOME/.sane/xscanimage" in a file called something like "umax.rc" (exact
name depending on your scanner model).

2) Make a copy of this file as e.g. "umax-3x5"

3) Change the settings in xscanimage, save them again, make a copy of the
"umax.rc" file with a different name, etc until you have an assortment of
files with all the settings you usually need.

4) Whenever you need a particular set of settings, copy or link the
appropriate file back as "umax.rc" and then do "Preferences->Restore
device settings" in xscanimage.
