>>>>> On Thu, 19 Nov 1998 16:30:29 -0500, "Michael K. Johnson" <johnsonm@redhat.com> said:
>> A GNU program should not recommend use of any non-free program,
>> and it should not refer the user to any non-free documentation.

Michael> I object. Trying to encourage freely-available
Michael> documentation is one thing, trying to refuse authors the
Michael> right to refer folks to non-free documentation when
Michael> appropriate is objectionable.

I agree. Actually, the requirement is ridiculous as far as SANE is
concerned. We're lucky if we can find documentation at all and when
we find it, we want to make it widely known/available.

>> GNU programs to follow them. For example, the documentation
>> files and comments in the program should speak of Linux-based GNU
>> systems or GNU/Linux systems, rather than calling the whole
>> system "Linux", and should use the term "free software" rather
>> than "open source".

Michael> Puh-leeze!

Michael> I know that my opinions don't mean too much, since I wasn't
Michael> the one who ported my backend to SANE, I only encouraged
Michael> it. But it's still my code, in part, and I am not
Michael> impressed by RMS's patronizing attitude here.

You opinion counts a lot. Personally, I can live with the GNU/Linux
requirement (but not with the "do not refer to non-free docs") and I
do think that being a GNU program would add visibility in the
non-Linux world. However, since nobody seems particularly
enthusiastic about making SANE part of GNU, we'll just leave things
the way they are (well, I don't mean to put words in anyones mouths so
if someone _is_ enthusiastic about it, speak up... ;-).
