Dear James,

I have finally solved my problem. The solution was that on the server I
had to comment out all devices that don't exist and only leave the 'net'
and 'hp' device in, like this:

# enable the next line if you want to allow access through the network:
net <-----
#apple
#canon
#coolscan
#dmc
#epson
hp <-----
#microtek
#microtek2
#mustek
#pint
#pnm
#qcam
#s9036
#snapscan
#tamarack
#umax

Earlier I had just bothered to uncomment the net device with everything
else enabled as well. I guess the program goes through the list, finds
apple etc. which don't exist, gives up and doesn't export the hp device
either, which does exist.

So now I can just type xscanimage on my client and can select from

pnm:0, pmn:1, net:server:hp:/dev/scanner

exactly what I wanted.

Thanks everybody,
Michael
