Hello Jeremy,

> I am new to sane and need some advice. I am
> planning to buy UMAX 1200s and was wondering what
> experience any of you might have had with this
> scanner running under sane. I also have a 2940u
> Adaptec SCSI card, which has 2 internal HD's and a
> zip drive hooked up to it.
>
> My main question is, is it possible to run my 2
> Linux HD's and a zip off of the same host adapter
> without my computer crashing or freezing. I was
> reading some doc at the sane web site that said you
> might want to use a second SCSI host adapter, which
> for me is impossible as I am all out of PCI slots
> (and cash for that matter ;-).

The umax-scanners don't really freeze the SCSI-bus for the
whole scan, but there are some "froozen moments" on the bus.
With my UMAX S12 scanner I get 1 or 2 seconds where the
scsi-bus is blocked. But that should be no problem for you,
I think.

Normally you don't have problems with a "crashed" scsi-bus,
as long as the scan is finshed right. You should not
turn off the scanner while linux is running and the scanner
is listed as a scsi-device (but you may delete it from list
and then turn it off).
If the scanner hangs while a scan you may crash the bus,
but that only happens, if you try to do something the scanner
or the driver does not know to work with, e.g. Quality Calibration!

Bye
Oliver
