Me again I'm afraid

Thanks to Michael K. Johnson, who wrote:
>
> That I can't answer, but if you can tell us exactly which mustek
> driver supports NeXTStep, including a pointer to the source code,
> we'll have a higher probability of being able to help. Internet
> access to your machine for one developer probably would also help.
>
My scanner is an OEM version Mustek 600 II CD single-pass. After
some difficulty it can now be persuaded to work with either Win'95 or
NT using an Adaptec 2940UW or a Symbios/NCR 810 card. NeXTStep
support would be far preferable.

The OEM feature means that its SCSI-ID string is "SCANNER" rather
than "MUSTEK".

I could arrange for internet access to a permanently-connected
machine running OS 4.0 for anyone who would be prepared to help out.

Frank M. Siegert <frank@this.net> has ported Arno Augustin's pnmscan
linux driver for the mustek 600CZ/CX and 1200CX 3-pass scanners to
NeXTStep. He has created an attractive graphical application around
it, both this and his modified pnmscan.c are available from
http://www.this.net/~frank/download/html
as MScanB3.NIHS.b.tar.gz and pnmscan.c respectively.

The original pnmscan linux source is available from:
http://www4.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~aoaugust/mustek/mustek.html

Frank Siegert was kind enough to say in comp.sys.next.hardware
article <5m460g$bnk$1@orista.ipc.uni-tuebingen.de>

"A freeware user level driver including source for the Mustek CX6000
(3-pass)scanner series is available on my homepage. (Beware: This
scanner has a real bad SCSI interface and dislikes any synchronous
transfers on the bus, it seems to works at a m68k NeXT)

Usually it is easy to port a, say Linux or BSD driver, over to
NeXTSTEP/OpenStep. I have the needed SCSI sources here, just give me
a call."

> Generic SCSI support is far from standardized, and so it has to be
> written anew for just about every platform. This takes some
> programming knowledge.
>

I gather that Frank's pnmscan.c does exactly this, but I'm afraid
it's far above my head.

> I'd say that supporting NeXTStep would be nice, not only for
> NeXTStep, but also because it will likely work then on Apple's
> Rhapsody when it is released.
>
Indeed - I'm sure the SANE interface and its associated front and
back ends could be extremely useful to many future Rhapsody users.

Many Thanks,
Neville
